Can you still hear success?

by Valerie M

I can no longer hear the sounds of morning:  the raindrops pitter-pattering softly on my window when I wake up to early morning showers, the coffee-maker grudgingly pushing out its caffeine-loaded waste into cups, the mother peacock and her babies eagerly calling for breadcrumbs outside my back door.

But I can still hear success.

I can no longer hear the everyday noises around the house: my cat purring contentedly after a lazy afternoon nap, the faithful air conditioner switching on and off like clockwork all day everyday, the needy telephone ringing off the hook three rooms away.

But I can still hear success.

I can no longer hear the sounds of work: my computer humming along with muffled defiance, my tired coworkers hastily rushing in and out of the room to make meetings and deadlines, the fussy copier in the room above reluctantly pushing out a thousand pages per hour.

But I can still hear success.

I can no longer hear the sounds of the evening: the army of mosquitoes hungrily buzzing for its next victim in the swamp by my backyard, the neighborhood children happily riding their bikes down the empty street, the playful German Shephard next door barking defensively at the dragonflies far beyond its reach.

But I can still hear success.

I can still hear success deep in my soul, throbbing through my veins, consuming my thoughts. I can hear its desires, its strength, its unfaltering perseverance.  I can hear it when I wake up every morning until I fall asleep every night.

I can still hear success. Can you?
