Truer words have never been spoken.
Statistics are overrated. Statistics are deceptive. But most of all, statistics are dangerous.
If you want to control someone, quote a statistic. If you want to diminish their self-worth, quote a statistic. If you want to instill fear and defeat in them, quote a statistic. If you want to put them in a place of inertia, quote a statistic.
Every number has two sides to a story. No one number can be used to apply to everyone. It’s all a matter of perception. So why do we keep falling into its trap? Why do people keep using them as if they are static facts across the board?
Is it because we don’t know better? Is it because we don’t care? Is it because we’re lazy?
Is it because we don’t want to take responsibility for our actions? Is it because it’s easier to blame everybody else for our problems? Are we looking for an easy way out?
Is it because we fear success? Is it because we fear failure? Is it because we fear life? Is it because we fear death? Is it because we fear fear?
What does all of it mean? Does it apply to you? Why should it stop you?
Yes, we are all a product of our environment. Yes, there are many things that are out of our control. But what’s the use of clinging on to things that have already happened? Stick with things that are in your control and use it to your advantage. Don’t let statistics dictate how you live your life. Contrary to popular belief, statistics aren’t there to tell us what we can or can’t do, who we will or won’t be, where we are or aren’t going.
Statistics are better left in a science laboratory. But for everything else, the numbers don’t make the man… the man makes the numbers.
