Make this year your year (and every year after that)

by Valerie M

2009 doesn’t look like it’s going to be such a great year given the economic state of the United States and the world. But what does all of that have to do with you? This year can be a great year for you, recession or no recession. Great does not necessarily mean easy, but it absolutely does mean great.

Since the real estate bubble burst and Wall Street started to implode on itself, everyone has been pointing fingers and assigning blame to everyone else but themselves. Do yourself a favor and don’t add yourself to the growing list of victims. Take it for what it is and move on.

The best thing you can do for yourself this year is to own your life. This means owning everything about you and everything going on in your life, good and bad.  This means beginning to accept who you are, flaws and all.

Now is the time to get back to the basics.  Instead of moping around and incessantly worrying, turn off the TV and start picking up a hobby or learning new skills. Focus on building quality relationships with people who share your interests and care about you. Stop selling yourself short and start taking care of yourself. Learn how to cook your favorite meals and stop eating out so much. Have a potluck with said friends. Stop being satisfied with mediocrity and start chasing your dreams again. Pay down your debt and save anything leftover. Read new books, classics and nonfiction: expose your mind to different viewpoints.

This stuff shouldn’t only apply when money is tight and you have more time on your hands because your company is downsizing. Unfortunately, for most people, it does. Don’t be one of those people who think like that. You are an ongoing project. Make that your priority, always.
